The control you speak of, its genesis, can be found in the European's desire for spices(etc.) which could only be found outside of Europe: i.e. ';Marco Polo's travels';.





This desire ushered in the ';Age of Exploration';: Columbus was looking for a quicker and easier route to India, when he discovered the New World.





Ininitially, conquest and control of foregin countries was not the goal of the exploring Europeans; only to gain sources, access to the spices, silk, etc.





They just naturally fell into political controlling these peoples, because there was rarely any central government with which they could deal; and most of the European powers had already evolved highly centralized and well organized political systems; and they eventually, naturally strove to super-impose their model on those asian/african counteries that they had to interact with, in order to sustain the flow of the goods they sought.





They were not imperialistic in the beginning; it was just that the west's technology and politiical systems were so superior to those of the asian/african countries, that the evolution of a self-imgage of superiority was a natural consequence.

Divide and conquer. Make Muslims afraid of Hindus. Hindus afraid of Muslims. Promise protection, bring in troops make a show of it then take control. European military's had developed devastating fire power , even from muskets. So keeping control was no problem. Any uprising was crushed by military might.
