Why do people frown on abortion as a form of birth control?

If abortions is a safe and practical procedure why not? If multiple abortions have no affect on the health of the woman or future pregnancies why not?

Why do any pro-choice people question this? Isn't abortion as a birth control a choice too? Shouldn't pro-choice people support ALL abortions regardless of the reason? Isn't that also a choice? Why do people frown on abortion as a form of birth control?
Putting the obvious philosophical issues aside for a moment, abortions are NOT absolutely safe.

According to one study, women who aborted in the year prior to their deaths were 60 percent more likely to die of natural causes, seven times more likely to die of suicide, four times more likely to die of injuries related to accidents, and 14 times more likely to die from homicide. Researchers believe the higher rate of deaths related to accidents and homicide may be linked to higher rates of suicidal or risk-taking behavior.

The leading causes of abortion related maternal deaths within a week of the surgery are hemorrhage, infection, embolism, anesthesia, and undiagnosed ectopic pregnancies. Legal abortion is reported as the fifth leading cause of maternal death in the United States, though in fact it is recognized that most abortion related deaths are not officially reported as such.

The risk of breast cancer almost doubles after one abortion, and rises even further with two or more abortions.

Women with one abortion face a 2.3 relative risk of cervical cancer, compared to non-aborted women, and women with two or more abortions face a 4.92 relative risk. Similar elevated risks of ovarian and liver cancer have also been linked to single and multiple abortions. These increased cancer rates for post-aborted women are apparently linked to the unnatural disruption of the hormonal changes which accompany pregnancy and untreated cervical damage.

Between 2 and 3% of all abortion patients may suffer perforation of their uterus, yet most of these injuries will remain undiagnosed and untreated. The risk of uterine perforation is increased for women who have previously given birth and for those who receive general anesthesia at the time of the abortion. Uterine damage may result in complications in later pregnancies and may eventually evolve into problems which require a hysterectomy, which itself may result in a number of additional complications and injuries including osteoporosis.

Significant cervical lacerations requiring sutures occur in at least one percent of first trimester abortions. Lesser lacerations, or micro fractures, which would normally not be treated may also result in long term reproductive damage. Latent post-abortion cervical damage may result in subsequent cervical incompetence, premature delivery, and complications of labor. The risk of cervical damage is greater for teenagers, for second trimester abortions, and when practitioners fail to use laminaria for dilation of the cervix.

Abortion increases the risk of placenta previa in later pregnancies (a life threatening condition for both the mother and her wanted pregnancy) by seven to fifteen fold. Abnormal development of the placenta due to uterine damage increases the risk of fetal malformation, perinatal death, and excessive bleeding during labor.

Women who had one, two, or more previous induced abortions are, respectively, 1.89, 2.66, or 2.03 times more likely to have a subsequent pre-term delivery, compared to women who carry to term. Prior induced abortion not only increased the risk of premature delivery, it also increased the risk of delayed delivery. Women who had one, two, or more induced abortions are, respectively, 1.89, 2.61, and 2.23 times more likely to have a post-term delivery (over 42 weeks). Pre-term delivery increases the risk of neo-natal death and handicaps.

Abortion is associated with cervical and uterine damage which may increase the risk of premature delivery, complications of labor and abnormal development of the placenta in later pregnancies. These reproductive complications are the leading causes of handicaps among newborns.

Abortion is significantly related to an increased risk of subsequent ectopic pregnancies. Ectopic pregnancies, in turn, are life threatening and may result in reduced fertility.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a potentially life threatening disease which can lead to an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy and reduced fertility. Of patients who have a chlamydia infection at the time of the abortion, 23% will develop PID within 4 weeks. Studies have found that 20 to 27% of patients seeking abortion have a chlamydia infection. Approximately 5% of patients who are not infected by chlamydia develop PID within 4 weeks after a first trimester abortion. It is therefore reasonable to expect that abortion providers should screen for and treat such infections prior to an abortion.

Endometritis is a post-abortion risk for all women, but especially for teenagers, who are 2.5 times more likely than women 20-29 to acquire endometritis following abortion.

Approximately 10% of women undergoing elective abortion will suffer immediate complications, of which approximately one-fifth (2%) are considered life threatening. The nine most common major complications which can occur at the time of an abortion are: infection, excessive bleeding, embolism, ripping or perforation of the uWhy do people frown on abortion as a form of birth control?
Abortion is a safer medical procedure (meaning less risk of infection, complications or death) than childbirth or getting your wisdom teeth pulled. You probably have a higher likelihood of having a stroke in response to using hormonal birth control than having complications with an abortion. Many many mulitple abortions probably could be damaging, though. Though the likelihood of a woman become pregnant that often, that close together is pretty slim.

I am pro-choice and I support a woman's choice to have an abortion if she feels she needs it. That option should be there. However, women (and men) should also exercise good judgment and have access and knowledge about other forms of birth control. Abortion isn't the only option, but it's an option. We should be aware of all them and be practical.
Why was birth abortion legalized at the first place?

It was so that pregnant woman whose life's were in danger could lose their babies without getting themselves killed.

It was so that rape victims could lose their unwanted pregnancy.

It was not introduced so that people can go around and act as animals and shag whom they desire, without facing the consequences.

Abortion is not birth control condoms are, pills are, and so on.

Abortion is killing a person, who has done nothing wrong.

Unfortunately the idea of abortion has been so mistreated that it should be banned all together.

In China abortion is used so that parents can decide their child's gender, because boys are seen as superior to girls, and could support the family more.

These days anyone who gets unwanted pregnancy goes to abortion straight away.
To begin, it's doubtful that anyone who is pro-choice, myself included, would enthusiastically advocate abortion as a form of birth control. This is a favorite argument of the pro-lifers and quite frankly, I'm tired of hearing it. Of all the woman I've known, I have only known one to use abortion so frequently as to be considered a form of birth control in the sense that you mean. This woman was a meth-addict, already had one neglected child and had multiple abortions. Would I have rather her had several children instead? Absolutely not. So, to answer your question, I would rather a irresponsible woman have several abortions than have several neglected children. That being said, the reality is that abortion is expensive, inconvenient and unlikely to be used as a ';go-to'; method of birth-control.
I support a woman's right to choose. I can still think that she's an idiot if she uses abortion as a primary form of birth control. I can still disagree with her getting an abortion in the first place. I don't have to agree with her or her reasons to support her right to choose what she does with her body.

Abortion should never be considered with the same thought as choosing which flavor ice cream to get this week. While that is my opinion, I will still support the right of any woman who wants an abortion for any reason. I may try to discuss things with her and make sure she understands what she is doing but it still must be her choice.

Note that being pro-choice means that we also support a woman's right to not have an abortion. That's what pro-choice is all about: choice.
The world is not black and white and a fetus is a potential human being. I am pro choice and the state has no say in the reproductive choices of its citizens - and that includes early stage pregnancy abortions.

But the longer a pregnancy goes the greater society's interest in protecting the unborn. Reasonable restrictions on later term abortions are reasonable.

Abortion is far riskier and more expensive than contraception - for that alone it should be frowned upon as a form of 'birth control'. A general distaste for safe, legal abortions is a good thing. Outlawing abortions is a bad thing.
I'm pro-choice in that I don't think the government should stand in the way of a woman making a decision that is best for her. The key word is ';choice'; not ';abortion';. People often confuse that... I'm pro-choice, not pro-abortion. I think abortion should be like the last resort... it certainly shouldn't be a method of birth control. There are too many other options out there- the pill, the shot, condoms, abstinence...
Liberals despise marriage and family because they are institutions which frown on promiscuity. Liberals are not obsessed with sex, but with promiscuity. Promiscuity is the dominate theme of the liberal media culture. The basis of their psychology is the elimination of moral responsibility. Abortion is necessary to guarantee genital freedom and eliminate moral consequence.
I have no idea why it is frowned upon. Fetuses can cause diseases in pregnant women including, but not limited to: AIDS, bubonic plague, a forced evolutionary disease derived from the common cold which causes your skin to stop regenerating, summer colds, cancer, and herpes. Stop having babies sheeple, it could kill you!
Why not just have your tubes tied? It would probably be cheaper in the long run and from the sounds of it, you would be doing society a favor.

Abortion is not meant to be a form a birth control and can cause serious reproductive problems for women.
it's usually people with a vested interest , that is , forcing the people to bear unwanted children is a proven method of keeping minorities and the poor down . rich folk need a docile workforce to exploit , and religion is always looking for new recruits . when was the last time you saw the church cut a child support check ?
Abortion is not a form of birth control! Anyone who doesn't protect themselves and get pregnant over and over and over again just to abort the baby disgust me. Abortion was never meant to be a form of birth control.
It's the woman's choice.

That many surgeries could lead to complications. But if the options are explained to her and she understands, it's still up to her.

EDIT- Bob- hahaha- ';guarantee genital freedom';

I'm gonna have to remember that one.
That is really gross. Who says it is safe? I certainly don't think murder is practical. You are being deceived if you think multiple (or even one) doesn't carry a risk to the woman's health and reproductive system. Abortionfacts.com
I'm fine with it. It is likely the most expensive way to practice birth control.

Abstinence, condom, pill, IUD, abortion, etc. The method of birth control you choose doesn't concern me.
Obama must be voted out...ASAP.

Obama must be voted out...ASAP.
Imagine someone you trust and need for everything...killing you for any reason, much less simple convenience.
I'm pro-choice and even I hate the fact that abortion is used a form of birth control.
it's killing a baby. use the pill or condoms or some other form of birth control. Please.
There are better forms of birth control.
