What was the reason for the diffrent control inputs on a deere and a cat trackhoe? Was it for safety?

The controls are ';backwards'; to one another when opperating a cat or a deere trackhoe. I have heard that the cat controles are for safety b/c if you were to get jolted fwd then the control sticks would have the input to curl the bucket and booms in to the hoe. What was the reason for the diffrent control inputs on a deere and a cat trackhoe?
