What does it mean for a birth control pill to be 99% effective?

Does this mean that 99 women out of 100 will not become pregnant when on the pill or that 1% of the time when your on the pill you capable of getting pregnant. This may mean the same thing.What does it mean for a birth control pill to be 99% effective?
I'm pretty sure that both of those could be accurate. I am pregnant and I was on the pill for 7 years so I believe it's highly effective but there's always that chance that you could become pregnant... It worked for me for a very long time, then all of a sudden I was pregnant.


My doctor suggested always using 2 forms of birth control due to the fact that she had 2 of her kids while on the pill...What does it mean for a birth control pill to be 99% effective?

It is not as other have stated a plain 1% chance of pregnancy. Else if the hundred women had sex twice a week for a year (one-hundred times) then alot more than one of them would become pregnant.
It means that if used correctly it is 99% effective, 99 out of 100 won't become pregnant if used correctly. Remember, that's if taken at the same time everyday and when asking a doctor when on certain meds if they can be mixed as some meds can weaken the effectiveness of birth control.
its not a specific statistic, they basically put that there so that you cant sue them if you accidentally get knocked up while on the pill. Its just like a condom, its not going to work all of the time, but it does work. 99% effective just means there is still a small chance you could get pregnant.
That is correct, they would mean the same thing. The only thing that is 100% effective is not having sex. They can't guarantee anything 100%, if they did and some one got pregnant than they are just asking for a law suit for giving false information.
I was taught that it's 99/100 women will not become pregnant on the pill. I think that it does also mean that 1% of the time you are on the pill, you could very well be that 100th woman.
