What are some affective ways to help control your anger?

My boyfriend has a hard time controlling his anger. He doesn't call me names or hit me, he just blows his top. He yells a lot. It's hard for us to have a normal discussion when we have disagreements. He can't just talk about something, he always has to yell. What are some affective ways to help control your anger?
Communication is very important when you are in a relationship, I have found that when you are having a disagreement with someone you should both repeat back to the other person what they are saying to you, I find our minds when in a disagreement tend to twist what is being said to us, and we sometimes respond in anger b/c we feel like we are being attacked. So if we repeat back to the other person what is being said to us we are less likely to twist it in our minds.

Fluffy Pink Elephants.
A good 3-5 in the slammer should help.
